SAAL Biennal 2015:
KRISTINA NORMAN /Tallinn/ Tähetund- staged tour
NB! Start from Kanuti Gildi SAAL (Pikk 20)

Artists create their work for example as a commission. Sometimes the commissioner speaks out for the whole nation, or even for all the nations, and they give the artist rather specific guidelines as to what can be represented and what can not. Certain artwork is created to blend into its era, and when most of the symbols of old symbolic arrangements have disappeared from the environment, the remaining artwork can, for the first time in its history, have a meaning and a function. Some works of art, however, have their star-bright hour when they have been physically or symbolically destroyed.

Kristina Norman is an artist and documentalist who has dedicated a large part of her work to investigating the essence of monuments and to the issues of collective remembering and forgetting. Through her art she often tries to make the power relations in a society visible and create situations that would help the public rearrange those relations in their minds. Her work has been showcased at various globally important art exhibitions and film festivals. In 2009 she represented Estonia at Venice Biennal and in 2014 she participated at Manifesta, the European Biennial of Contemporary Art.

Staged tours are an initiative of SAAL Biennaal executed by chosen artists via their personal perspectives as city-space explorations, acting as a part of the festival quest to recreate the link with its location.
