August DanceFestival 2014

International performing arts festival 21.-31. August 2014

Taken place since 1996, August DanceFestival is Tallinn's oldest international performing arts festival that has developed through time and blurred by fields following the tendance of blending borders in overall arts. Foremost, it is a festival about artists, their thoughts and actions. It is a festival where risks are taken and questions asked. Questions about the society, democracy, art, future, love, identity, the choices of people and communities - that is, much about those things that form the meaning of „nowadays life".

The 15th festival in row has many highlights, but we would like to stress the attendancy of one of the most well-known living choreographers, Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker, who is visiting Estonia for the first time. After long negotiations it will be possible to see a contemporary classic from year 1982 "Fase, Four Movements to the Music of Steve Reich"  - a duet created on Steve Reich's music that includes choreographer herself performing on stage. The importance of Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker and her group Rosas both in the history and presence of contemporary dance and performing arts would be hard to overestimate.

For the joy of contemporary theatre friends we have invited here Philippe Quesne who is one of the brightest stars in today's France and perhaps in whole Europe. From his works we have also chosen one of his earlier pieces, „L'Effet de Serge". His performances have been compared to films. A bit surrealistic, yet funny films.

August Dance Festival has always been characterized by local premieres, even by fresh, surprising ones  that mark the trust in author's vision. This year's festival will be opened with a new performance „Men" by Mihkel Ernits together with millimeter performance group that sets focus on men. The regular ones. Kadri Noormets and Berlin-resident choreographer Diego Agullò will represent their new piece on a beach near Tallinn. A fresh dance film by Madis Ligema will be premiered at Sõprus cinema. „Houses of the Dancing Shadows" is a contemporary short film connecting choreography, architecture and citizens' iniative.

From the list you'll find a very special lecture-performance by Belgian artist Sarah Vanhee. During the festival week Sarah Vanhee and an Estonian lecturer visit different meetings in local offices to give one short lecture. "Lecture for Every One" talks about how an artist perceives the modern world and our future, adding what she has to tell to all of us. At the end of the process there's a possibility to listen to this lecture and comments also in theatre.

After those already mentioned, „Holy night", a piece by Oksana Tralla, Flo Kasearu, Marianne Männi, Riina Maidre ja Veronika Vallimäe will be shown. The performance  won one of this season's theatre awards.

With a physical and astonishing spectacle that touches the boarders of theatre and circus we have invited to Tallinn an Italian choreographer Alessandro Sciarroni. Six top jugglers take the stage.
Swedish-Dutch choreographer Jefta van Dinther's performance „GRIND" gives equal attention to sound and lightning beside movement. It is a collaboration of three artists: choreographer-director, lightning designer and sound dseigner-composer. The result lies in the journey.

Festival ends with a remarkable performance from Belgian choreographer Lishbet Gruwez. "It's going to get worse and worse and worse, my friend" is spot-on, cold and crazing.

Festival brings together guests from Estonia, Belgium, Italy, Netherlands, France and Sweden. The aim is to concentrate on these specific artists while offering thrills to the audience. Thrills that you might not even be prepared for.
