DANCE PLATFORM

NU PERFORMANCE FESTIVAL II

Tallinn Art Hall and Kanuti Gildi SAAL present:
NU Performance Festival II - International Performance Festival in Tallinn

2–17 November 2007 in Kanuti Gildi SAAL, Von Krahl Theatre and KUMU Auditorium

cvn

NU Performance Festival takes place for the second time. During the first “release” in 2005, it was written in the foreword that “NU Performance Festival wanders around in the space between theatre, the fine and performance arts, (pop) music, and contemporary dance. This is an undefined, amorphous and dynamic region, where different specialties, understandings and traditions entwine. In this no man’s land hybrid forms emerge and new artists’ positions are created.” We believe this is still relevant in defining the festival’s “ideological” platform. And this is what connects the performers and performances in this festival.

The program of this year’s festival is not built around a single subject or problem raised; continually important for us is mapping the author's positions of different artists and presenting their various creative methods. However, there is a certain dimension that runs through the program like a thin red thread, binding the festival into a whole. That dimension could be named one way or another, but we would prefer to call it “experience”. The program includes several experienced and well-experienced artists, such as Stuart Brisley, Susanne Linke, Roi Vaara, Douglas Dunn and Carl Michael von Hausswolff; we could already unhesitatingly call them “classics”, yet their creative platform has not lost its topicality even at the end of the first decade of the 21st century.

In collaboration with Von Krahl Theatre the art classic Leonhard Lapin’s work Multiplied Man will be reconstructed in full. Staged in Estonian Youth Theatre in 1980, that performance, chrestomatic in many ways, was the first interdisciplinary multimedia performance in Estonia. In parallel with Lapin, Susane Linke’s work Im Bade wannen will be performed; that dance show, still performed by the artist herself, comes from the same temporal-spatial situation, also from 1980, and has prompted the critics to say that “it seems as if Linke is simultaneously dancing in two different times: the performance is like a remembrance of the woman who used to tell those stories”. Hopefully, these two performances will be able create at least a planked footway, if not a bridge, between the two times and worlds.

The central topic of the NU Seminar on November 8 is the question of “learning from history”, or more precisely, of how history and historical strategies could be applied in contemporary art practices. On 14 and 15 November, in collaboration with Kumu Art Museum  we will show films in Kumu Auditorium, introducing different historical interdisciplinary artistic strategies.

Somewhat exceptional in this festival is its opening chord, Martin Creed’s Variety Performance. Creed was born about the time when most of the other performers in the festival were already starting their careers. At the same time, however, Creed is the best and purest representative of the artist’s position that NU Performance Festival foremost tries to value – playful, witty, and careless of disciplines.

Respectfully yours,
Anders Härm and Priit Raud
